Faith Works - Tried and Tested

January 19, 2019

Outlook determines outcome, and attitude determines action.

Life holds few guarantees but here are two for the New Year: “You will face troubles; your
faith will be tested.” The believer who expects life to be easy is in for a shock.

James 1:2-4

Faith Works - Back to Work

January 12, 2019

The series title, Faith Works, is somewhat a play on words, in that Faith produces
results (it works, it’s effective) AND it’s active (it’s exercised and not passive).

We are praying that in 2019 we will have a faith explosion that will be evidenced by God
doing greater things in and through us for His glory!

Scripture: James 2. 26
“The very moment you separate body and spirit, you end up with a corpse. Separate faith and
works and you get the same thing: a corpse.”

Transitions | Living Proof

April 21, 2018

Immediately after reporting seeing Jesus alive, the previously heartbroken, even cowardly,
disciples turned into passionate messengers of the Gospel. Nothing they
experienced—prison, persecution, imminent death—got them to deny they had seen Jesus

Leaving Your Comfort Zone | Without Fear

March 31, 2018

Nothing To Fear Here

The angel spoke to the women: “There is nothing to fear here. I know you’re looking for Jesus, the One they nailed to the cross. He is not here. He was raised, just as he said. Matthew 28. 5-6.

Healthy children will not fear life if their elders have integrity enough not to fear death. Erik Erikson

Leaving Your Comfort Zone | Without Force

March 24, 2018

“If anyone forces you to go one mile, go with them two miles.”  ~ Matthew 5:41

The “extra mile” moments in life are typically outside of our comfort zone, they are beyond our personal limitations and natural ability. God doesn’t guarantee us an easy road or short cuts; however He does promise to renew our strength and gives us the ability to press on.

Leaving Your Comfort Zone | Without Judging

March 10, 2018

Let’s be honest - you and I - we judge others, and they judge us. We all do it. Sometimes we judge with positive or non-harming intentions. Unfortunately, our judgment often comes from a negative place, a damaged self, with darker intent.

Dietrich Bonhoeffer offers wise counsel: “We must learn to regard people less in the light of what they do or omit to do, and more in the light of what they suffer.”

Leaving Your Comfort Zone | Without Remorse

February 24, 2018

Repentance or Remorse?

While Peter is a famous example of repentance, Judas is a famous example of remorse. Repentance is God focused; it inspires change and invites forgiveness.
Remorse, on the other hand, is self-focused; it encourages isolation and invites shame!

Leaving Your Comfort Zone | Without Perfection

February 17, 2018

Pushing For Perfection?

Live a life of meaning and connection instead of pushing for perfection. There’s a lot that we can learn from Peter’s struggle to become “rocklike”—stable and consistent. And in the strength that only Jesus can give, we too can have victory over our failures.

Leaving Your Comfort Zone | Without Haste

February 10, 2018

Beat The Rush

Are you breaking divine speed limits?

Have you become comfortable with the adrenaline rush of an overcommitted schedule?

Jesus never rushed and never missed an appointment. He set His life to the rhythm of connection and compassion.

With great intentionality, Jesus stayed unrushed.

So can you.

Leaving Your Comfort Zone | Without Borders

Cross-bearing and Comfort Seeking Don’t Mix

The One who came to relieve the pain of others had very little experience of comfort Himself. He was a ‘man of sorrows, acquainted with grief.’ And we are called to follow ‘in His steps’.

The Belonging Co. | Building your Village

January 27, 2018

There is no substitute for in person interactions.

Social media is great for making and maintaining contact with people.

True belonging, real connection and real empathy require meeting real

people in a real space in real time.

The Belonging Co. | We All Long To Belong

January 20, 2018

We long to belong.

There is deep within the heart and soul of every one of us a need and longing to belong.  Anyone without some sense of belonging to someone or some group, is a risk of becoming physically ill, depressed or even suicidal.

The Belonging Co. | Quit Worrying

January 13, 2018

Scripture: 1 Corinthians 6.19-20

Quit Worrying

So don’t worry about tomorrow. Tomorrow will worry about itself.

Each day has enough trouble of its own (Matt. 6.34).

It Takes A Village To Raise A Child

A Clean Heart

December 30, 2017

Question: What’s better than a clean or fresh start to the New Year?

Answer: A ‘clean heart’ a ‘renewed spirit’ and ‘restored joy’ for the New Year!

Only God can give you these gifts.

Give More | Presence, not Presents

October 07, 2017

It is in giving that we receive (Saint Francis of Assisi).

Christmas is about giving presence, not presents!

Christmas begins and ends with Jesus.
Don’t waste

valuable resources on finding and buying trinkets, invest them in real treasure.

Give More | Kingdom Economics

September 30, 2017

The highest use of capital is not to make more money, but to make money do more for the betterment of life. Henry Ford

The foundation of the Kingdom of God’s economy is access. It (access) is more powerful than ownership.

The foundation of the world's economy is private ownership.

The Kingdom of heaven's economy is not built by money - it is based on access.

The Next Chapter | Final service at Jubilee Primary School

Pentecost Sunday - Beth Nicholls

June 03, 2017

Pentecost is often called the birthday of the Christian Church. On the day of Pentecost (Acts 2) those followers of Jesus who had gathered in Jerusalem were given the gift of the Holy Spirit just as Jesus had promised.

The Next Chapter | Building Graceland - No Perfect People Allowed

May 20, 2017

“Darling girl, don't waste a single day of your life being at war with your body, just embrace it.”

That's the message behind the documentary from Taryn Brumfitt, which screened in Robina on the 17th May 2017, 'Embrace'. This is a message we want to convey to all the women and girls in our lives and in our city.

The following as a conversation of ’Questions and Answers’ on the subject of body image which took place on the 21st May 2017, at Uniting North, between a Pastor (Orrell Battersby) and a Clinical Psychologist  (Lauren Chatman).

The Next Chapter | Inheritance

May 13, 2017

What did you inherit from your Mother?

What kind of legacy will you leave?

Will you leave a legacy of faith, an inheritance that is unending, untarnished, and unfading?

(1 Peter 1.3-4)

The Next Chapter | In The Meantime

May 06, 2017

You’ll get through this. It won’t be painless. It won’t be quick.

But God will use this mess for good.

In the meantime don’t be foolish or naïve. But don’t despair either. With God’s help you will get through this.

Max Lucado

The Next Chapter | In-Between

April 22, 2017

The old adage is true!

You can’t start the next chapter of your life if you keep re-reading your last one.

April 15, 2017

Happily ever after is not a conclusion. It’s a choice.

The last word of Psalm 23 is the best word in the whole psalm: “Forever.”

Life on earth is short, and the deadline always comes faster than we think.

Every single one of us is on a collision course with eternity.

Your Place at His Table

April 08, 2017

The Table as a Place of Connection

David the songwriter the shepherd boy who became a king reminders us that The Lord who shepherds has a ‘rod’ for protection a ‘staff’ for correction and a ‘table’ for connection.

Psalm 23.5.

You'll Never Walk Alone

April 01, 2017

You’re safe, not because of the absence of danger, but because of the presence of Christ!

Psalm 23, 4

Your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

We Are Not Afraid

March 25, 2017

Theresa May's defiant message in speech to House of Commons, the morning after a terrorist attack in Westminster, says it all: “Our message is simple, 'We are not afraid'.

He Guides and He Guards | The Third Sunday of Lent

March 18, 2017

Psalm 23.3

He guides me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.

The Good shepherd guides and guards.

He doesn’t sit in heaven looking down on us—his primary work is accomplished at ground level, in and among his sheep. He literally works in the field.

Restless | Second Sunday in Lent

March 11, 2017

The grass is always greener…

We are predisposed to wanting what is greener—and it’s always greener on the other side of the fence.

We’re always searching for something greener.

God is the only one who will truly satisfy; God is our green “pasture” (Jer. 50:6-7).

Our problem is that we are colorblind.

“What do you want?”

March 04, 2017

The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not be in want.

The Psalmist reminds us that He prepares a table for you.

The question is: ‘What will you bring to the table?’

Another great question is: ‘Who will you bring to the table?’

Maybe eating alone or with the same people day in day out is something we need to give up for Lent!

A Simple Year - "See it big, keep it simple" - Orrell Battersby

January 28, 2017

Stocktaking (Spirit)

God, make a fresh start in me, shape a Genesis week from the chaos of my life. Psalm 51-10

1 Thessalonians 5:23-24 (MSG)

23-24 May God himself, the God who makes everything holy and whole, make you holy and whole, put you together—spirit, soul, and body—and keep you fit for the coming of our Master, Jesus Christ. The One who called you is completely dependable. If he said it, he’ll do it!

A Simple Year - “See it big, and keep it simple.” - Orrell Battersby

January 21, 2023

Stocktaking (emotions)

“There are only two emotions: love and fear. All positive emotions come from love, all negative emotions from fear. From love flows happiness, contentment, peace, and joy. From fear comes anger, hate, anxiety and guilt. It's true that there are only two primary emotions, love and fear. But it's more accurate to say that there is only love or fear, for we cannot feel these two emotions together, at exactly the same time. They're opposites. If we're in fear, we are not in a place of love. When we're in a place of love, we cannot be in a place of fear.” Elisabeth Kübler-Ross

A Simple Year - "Less is the new more..." - Orrell Battersby

January 14, 2023

Switch to ‘Joy Mode;’ own the experience not the stuff.

Stocktaking is the process of reviewing and assessing life in general and possessions in particular. Stockpiling is a pandemic. Stocktaking is a remedy.

2nd Corinthians 5

14-15 Our firm decision is to work from this focused center: One man died for everyone. That puts everyone in the same boat. He included everyone in his death so that everyone could also be included in his life, a resurrection life, a far better life than people ever lived on their own.

Switch to ‘Joy Mode;’ own the experience not the stuff.

If you look forward to living with less stuff, less stress and less obligation so you can have more time, money and energy to pursue what matters most, choose to live a simple year.
